Provided by Trinity Mirror Plc Credits: Birmingham Mail Birmingham Mail First we went to a local Lidl store and packed a basket with standard grocery items that many of us would have on our shopping list. Then we looked for similar products in an Aldi store that was only a short drive away. Which would be the winner at the checkout? Note that white bread (if that's your preferred loaf) was the same price as the wholemeal. We had no idea how this would turn out, this was an independent assessment where we simply picked some similar standard items from both shops - enough to fill a basket. Prices were correct as of April 4, 2017. Easter supermarket opening times in Birmingham: Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrisons and Waitrose Provided by Trinity Mirror Plc What's clear is that many items are the same price in both stores - but where there are differences that affect the overall bill is in the fresh produce, as well as some other items such as the jars of pasta sauce. That's where Aldi scored its overall advantage in our test - even though its carrots were more expensive and you get one less banana in the bag. We also noticed that, in the branches we visited at least, Aldi had a better selection of fruit and veg. The packs of sandwiches on offer looked much nicer too.
